When Carle was 12 or 13, a teacher secretly introduced him to Expressionist art, which was banned under the Nazi regime, per Mark Kennedy of the Associated Press (AP). The Times reports that he rarely talked about his time in Nazi Germany but once said that the “grays, browns and dirty greens used by the Nazis to camouflage the buildings” heightened his love of vibrant colors. Carle himself was conscripted to dig trenches for the Nazi army at age 15. Six years later, his immigrant parents moved the family back to Germany, where his father was drafted into the military and became a prisoner of war in Russia. The artist then pieced the paper together to form images.Ĭarle was born in 1929 in Syracuse, New York. “Our preschool is caterpillar-themed with all of his wonderful and inspiring books and educational activities,” wrote teacher Marion Butlin in the guestbook. In light of the news, a flood of remembrances of Carle and his work spread across social media, as well as a guestbook created by the Carle family.
